What a surprise it was to find an intact stamp mill at this 1870's abandoned silver mine. After driving on a cliff side road we rounded a corner to see a substantial old mining operation. There were multiple workings covering a large and very steep mountainside. Far below the road, using binoculars, we spotted what we thought was a stamp mill. It sure looked out of place where we found out later it has stood for 112 years.
The mine initially was worked for lead/silver and later for silver chloride. There are large areas inside the mines that have big crystals. We used a UV light on the crystals to make them fluoresce, which created brilliantly colored and beautiful veins. After exploring the upper workings we worked our way down the mountain and found several drifts and open stopes. There were artifacts scattered all the way down the mountain.
Far below the road stood the historic and mighty one stamp mill. It is much larger than what we thought it would be standing over 20 feet tall. The mill appeared to be almost completely intact except that the engine was missing. After thoroughly inspecting the stamp mill we climbed back up the mountain and finished the explore by checking out the drift at the road level which we had skipped earlier.
We really hope you enjoy this video as much as we enjoyed the explore it took to make it.
