Who was Elijah in the Bible?

The Prophet Elijah is one of the most important figures in the Old Testament.

Among the many stories about Elijah in the Bible, he is best known for:

1. Elijah opposed King Ahab, Queen Jezebel, and 450 false prophets who worshiped Baal instead of God.

2. Elijah defeated the false prophets on Mount Carmel.

3. Elijah encountered God in a still, small voice on Mount Horeb (Sinai).

Elijah appointed Elisha to succeed him as God's prophet.

Here is a full biography of the Prophet Elijah:

Many kings of Israel turned away from God to worship the false gods of other nations. King Ahab married a foreign princess named Jezebel, who worshiped a god called Baal. She convinced her husband to build a temple to her god and she brought in 450 false prophets into the kingdom.

The God of Israel called forth Elijah to be his prophet and stand up against King Ahab and Jezebel. The Prophet Elijah declared that God would send a drought to the kingdom and then he went into hiding in Zarephath with a widow and her son who he miraculously healed.

Eventually, Elijah returns to confront the queen and her Baal prophets on Mount Carmel. There before the king, queen, and people of Israel, Elijah challenged the false prophets to ask their false god to call down fire upon the mountain. When they failed, he built an altar of twelve stones and God sent down fire in answer to his prayer. He won, but the queen sought revenge.

Elijah fled again this time to Mount Horeb (Sinai). There he encountered God in a still small voice. Afterwards God did many other miracles through him.

As he grew older, a man named Elisha became his servant until the day God took Elijah body and soul up to heaven in a whirlwind with a chariot and horses of fire. Elisha succeeded him as God’s prophet to the people of God.
