37 pts, 8r, 5a, 1b / 16-31 fg, 5-5 ft

This was the Lakers’ 3rd regular season game of 2005-06. Having been granted Phil’s unwavering instruction to “let loose,” Kobe continued his aggressive approach offensively. Near the beginning of the last video (vs Phoenix) while Kobe was at the free throw line, Doug Collins described a conversation he had with Phil regarding Kobe’s 3pt attempts. Phil wanted Kobe to not necessarily shoot a lesser amount of 3’s, but rather to post a higher percentage across the board.

Kobe started the season unleashing from everywhere except beyond the arc. Through the first 8 games, he took only 6 three-pointers out of 218 total shot attempts. This was soon to change - as the season progressed, Kobe’s assertiveness from deep increased. He finished November averaging 3.0/game, logged 4.9 in December, 8.9 in January, 9.1 in February, and 6.6 in March/April. On the season, Kobe ended up taking a career high 6.5 three-pointers/game, shooting a very respectable 35%.

Despite logging 7.1 more FGA’s/game than the campaign prior (2004-05), Kobe elevated all three major percentage categories (fg-3pt-ft) by a notable amount. Included in the following data are relative subcategories.

2004-05 2005-06

*Dist - 13.9 ft 15.1 ft
FG - 43.3% 45.0%
2PT - 47.2% 48.2%
3PT - 33.9% 34.7%
FT - 81.6% 85.0%

^0-3 60.6% 59.8%
^3-10 42.7% 49.4%
^10-16 36.0% 45.5%
^16-3pt 38.4% 42.1%

*Average Distance of FGA (ft)
^2PT FG% by Distance (ft)

True Shooting percentage was intentionally omitted from the comparison above. TS% is a measure of shooting efficiency that takes into account field goals, 3pt field goals, and free throws. It can often function as a misleading statistic. TS% is capable of being hijacked by players whose points are scored primarily from layups/dunks and/or wide open jumpers because it does not consider volume and degree of difficulty (i.e. Player A [superstar] takes 25 contested FGA’s/game vs Player B [role player] takes 10 lightly contested or “beneficiary” FGA’s/game created for him). Where shots are attempted from (distance) is also unrepresented. In addition, the stat heavily rewards players who achieve free throw opportunities at a high rate relative to their total FGA’s. This in part is why Kobe logged a higher TS% in 2004-05 (56.3%) than he did in 2005-06 (55.9%) even though his overall FG, 2PT, 3PT, and FT percentages were better in the latter.
