Rita Hunter - A Tall Poppy In Australia - Part Three - Conclusion

And now, the conclusion to this 3 part series on "what happened to "Rita's Australian Career". It pains me to tell you that, as I have gone through her paperwork in these last few years, I found a draft of a letter that was sent to The AO management, begging for work and her thought at considering asking for work as a chorister. Yes, it was that bad! My parents had the occasional argument, as most married couples do. However, even though they remained married, the strain that this situation put on us as a family was immense and fractured our little family. Divorce was mentioned twice in my lifetime with Mum and Dad. Both times were as a result of what happened here in Australia and her career. She had moments of glory. Mere moments but her career here in Australia never really recovered. By today's standards, she was cancelled. The "faith" that is mentioned by management was performances of Elektra in 1985 (2 performances in Melbourne and 1 performance in Sydney - Sydney were to have 2 performances but one of them was cancelled by management) and Turandot in 1988. To the best of my knowledge......that was the last of this "faith" that they had in her. She died with wounds that never healed and Dad died with the hatred for the damage they did to her. I have carried both my Mother's wounds and endeavoured to let go of that hatred ever since.
