My enthusiasm for Chinatowns has brought me to some of the most random places lol.  Last time in Oregon, we drove a total of 6 hours from Portland to John Day JUST to visit an old Chinatown remnant known as the Kam Wah Chung!

Originally a trading post, the building was purchased by 2 Chinese immigrants, Lung On and Ing Hay in 1887.  Together, they operated the building as a general store, make-shift hospital (Ing Hay was referred to as "Doc Hay"), and a social center for the thousands of Chinese gold miners and laborers in Eastern Oregon.  After Ing Hay died in 1952, the building was boarded up and left untouched for nearly 20 years.  When it was finally opened in the late 1960s, it was a perfectly preserved time capsule with rare herbs, Chinese medicine, unopened merchandise, and thousands of artifacts.  

Today, Kam Wah Chung is an Oregon State Heritage Site and museum where visitors can get a glimpse of what life used to be like in John Day's Chinatown!
