Hierapolis, also transliterated as Hierapolis or Hierapolis Antikas, was an ancient city of Anatolia, near the northwest corner of the Taurus Mountains. After it was destroyed by an earthquake in the 4th century AD, the city was abandoned and largely forgotten until the early 20th century, when it was accidentally rediscovered by a group of American archaeologists. Today, Hierapolis is a popular tourist destination, known for its large thermal springs and its well-preserved ruins.
