Hey everyone, I hope you're all doing well and getting ready for the exam. Today, let's talk about the Computer Systems paper for February-March 2024, code 0478, SL12. It's a 1 hour 45-minute paper, no additional materials needed, just use a dark blue or black pen. Remember to write your name, center number, and candidate number at the top. Each question's marks are specified. For the first question, computers use binary because they're made of switches and gates that can only be on or off. Humans can't process binary as quickly as computers. For Part B, the ASCII number for 'n' is 78, so for 'Q' it's 81. Binary for 78 is 1001110. For Part C, higher sampling resolution in sound recording means more accurate recordings. Part D is about explaining how 'red' is represented in a character set.

Question two discusses CPU registers' roles in the fetch-decode-execute cycle. Statements B and C are incorrect because MDR stores addresses, not instructions. Part B explains GHz processors' speed, while Part C talks about how more cores improve CPU performance. Increasing cache size in Part D also enhances performance. In Part E, RAM, an example of primary storage, stores data for quick access.

Question three asks about OS functions. It allocates memory to processes, provides a platform for running applications, and manages peripherals like data buffers. Interrupts alert the processor to handle tasks like keyboard inputs. Drawing a diagram for entering a URL involves stages like sending the URL to DNS, which finds the IP and sends it back to the computer, then requesting the web page from the server, and finally, receiving and displaying the page. Remember, DNS videos can help clarify concepts.
Okay, let's tackle question five. I need to complete the description of digital currencies using provided terms. Some digital currencies utilize blockchains, decentralized databases where each transaction is securely stored and linked to previous ones. This ensures transparency and prevents alterations. Digital currencies only exist electronically and lack a physical form. Moving on to question six, a self-driving tractor autonomously handles farming tasks. Apart from its mechanical structure, it exemplifies automation, reducing manual labor. Now, onto question seven. Encrypting data before transmission ensures its confidentiality, safeguarding it from unauthorized access. Question eight focuses on converting numbers. We utilize the exadecimal system to represent binary numbers, making it easier for humans to read and enter. Now, let's dive into question nine. Performing logical shifts on binary integers, like a right shift by four places, divides a positive integer by 16, aiding in data manipulation. Finally, wrapping up, understanding these concepts enhances our learning journey in technology.
