Jewelweed Juiciness: Prevent Poison Ivy Rash (New Video Lesson)

This wild Native American annual, scientifically called Impatiens pallida, helps us to keep poison ivy from creating a rash on our skin. Learn to ID, harvest, and use this soothing, astringent, cooling friend.

The juice and fresh mash of jewelweed are applied topically to prevent the skin from binding with urushiol, the irritating substance found in poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac.

The species of jewelweed (Impatiens pallida) featured in this video lesson is known as pale jewelweed and pale touch-me-not, and it produces light yellow flowers. Its closely related, not-pale cousin, Impatiens capensis, is used similarly, and has orange flowers with spots—giving rise to its other common name spotted touch-me-not.

Look for jewelweed in damp, moist soil, in part sun to shade, in woodlands, water edges, bogs, moist gardens, and damp meadows.

Range: Eastern N. America: Newfoundland to Saskatchewan, south to Georgia west to Kansas.

Dimensions: Height: 2–6 ft.; Width: 2–3 ft.
