Released in 1996, Resident Evil expanded upon Capcom's NES horror title Sweet Home and created one of the most influential games ever made. 25 years later, Resident Evil is still going strong. Resident Evil kickstarted the survival horror golden age that lasted until around the mid 2000s.

While Shinji Mikami and his team at Capcom would take another crack here with the 2002 REmake, it's always fun to return to the original Resident Evil and see where the series began.

While they did have some frameworks and inspiration to work off of with Sweet Home, most of what was covered here in Resident Evil was uncharted territory. How much they were able to get right with their first attempt is staggering.

With Resident Evil, they created one of the most influential games ever made, full of soul and that goofy enduring charm that's hard to replicate.
