It is known to all that he was a court jester in the court of Nadia Raja Krishnachandra in the 18th century. He had a keen intelligence by which he made everyone totally spellbound. He was considered as a Navaratna of the court of King Krishnachandra.

His wits and intellect are narrated in West Bengal and Bangladesh to this day in numerous short stories. Their origin may be traced to local oral cultures of humour. The stories are popular and humorous, often ridiculing figures of authority, including the king, Krishnachandra, himself.

History makes us confused about the original identify of Gopal Bhanr. Many wise persons, historians remarked that Gopal Bhanr is undoubtedly a real character, whereas a great number of eminent critics and historians questioned the formers' claim with logical arguments and strong evidences.
