The yogic traditions of South India have long been guarded in secrecy, imparted only from guru to shishya, the spiritually mature disciple. Among the enlightened beings were the Sages, who progressed towards the ultimate objective of yoga – to merge with the Divine in their very physical form. These liberated sages are called Siddhars who have transcended beyond ‘enlightenment’.

According to Devaaram, a canonical work in the Saiva tradition, those who seek to understand God are called bhakths, and those who have attained and comprehended God are known as Siddhars. The term "Siddha" originates from, "Chittaa", or "Chit," signifying knowledge or consciousness. When the soul's consciousness (Chit) is fully realized, the three aspects - buddh(the intellect), manas(memory), and ahankaara(the sense of identity or ego) are unveiled. Lord Muruga or Karthikeya is said to have been the aadhi guru of all siddhars and lord shiva is the aadhi siddhar of this ancestry.

Many of these Siddhars kept spiritual diaries and expressed their profound realizations through poetry.

Siddhars have also bestowed upon humanity a wealth of valuable treasures. These include Siddha medicine, Ayurveda, Alchemy, Ashtaanga yoga, Tantra sadhana, maantrikam, mantras, astrology, and numerous other sciences that significantly enhance and improve our lives.

The enlightened Siddhars have transcended human levels by mastering breathing techniques to balance the naadis. Eeeda (left side lunar channel) and Pingala (right side solar channel). They awakened the Kundalini, the divine energy (or shakti), through the central channel or sushumna naadi, starting from the muladhara chakra at the base of the spine, to the sahasrara chakra at the top of the head. This profound practice led them to attain god and Ashtama siddhis.

The Ashtama Siddhis are 8 supernatural powers or superhuman capabilities that Siddhars and other realized beings attain through constant practice of yogas instructed by their gurus. These Siddhis include Anima (becoming smaller than the smallest), Mahima (becoming larger than the largest), Garima (becoming extremely heavy), Laghima (becoming weightless), Prapti (attaining anything desired), Prakamya (adapting to any circumstances), Isitva (Influencing others as per one’s will), and Vasitva (control others mind).
