On the occasion of Jack Whitten’s 2017 exhibition, ‘More Dimensions Than You Know: Jack Whitten, 1979 – 1989’ at Hauser & Wirth London, a conversation between the artist and exhibition curator Richard Shiff with Mark Rappolt, Editor of Art Review.

Born in Bessemer, Alabama in 1939, Jack Whitten is celebrated for his innovative processes of applying paint to the surface of his canvases and transfiguring their material terrains. Although Whitten initially aligned with the New York circle of abstract expressionists active in the 1960s, his work gradually distanced from the movement's aesthetic philosophy and formal concerns, focusing more intensely on the experimental aspects of process and technique that came to define his practice.

Curated by Richard Shiff, ‘More Dimensions Than You Know’ has a historical focus, bringing together a large number of Whitten’s paintings from 1979 to 1989. These years marked a period of intense experimentation for the artist and reflect his intellectual engagement with contemporary changes in science and technology.

Hauser & Wirth is an international contemporary and modern art gallery with spaces in Zurich, London, Somerset, New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Gstaad, St. Moritz, Monaco, Menorca, Paris and Basel.
