The trains
Rock Island EMD Model TA Loco pulling a passenger train out of the Milwaukee Depot in Minneapolis

Milwaukee Road F-7 4-6-4 Baltic type streamlined steam locomotive pulls out with the Afternoon Hiawatha

Chicago & Northwestern E-6A / E-6A with The 400 departs Eau Claire Wisconsin

Milwaukee Road E-7A / E-7a with the Afternoon Hiawatha pulls across Chestnut Street Interlocking in St Paul headed for the St Paul Union Depot

Soo Line passenger train with a 10-wheeler 4-6-0 goes through Chestnut Street

Milwaukee Road triple header - three steam locomotives work to pull a large freight up the Short line Hill in St Paul

Milwaukee Road 4-4-2 Atlantic Type streamlined steam loco with a passenger train

The next views are from the tower at the St Paul Union Depot
The trackage was complex - many puzzle or four-way switches used to save space
The tracks on the left go up the hill and are Great Northern and Northern Pacific - used by the GN NP C&NW Soo Line and CGW RRs

The tracks to the right are Burlington and Milwaukee headed down river to the East

A Northern Pacific 4-6-2 Pacific Type steam locomotive arrives

A Chicago Great Western 4-6-0 10-Wheeler Type steam loco pulls out with a passenger train - headed to Minneapolis

A Gas-Electric car with a coach leaves next

A Chicago & NorthWestern passenger train comes into the depot with an Omaha 4-6-2 Pacific Type steam loco as another C& NW train leaves

A Northern Pacific A Class Northern Type backs onto a passenger train
Note that the Northern Pacific was the first railroad to use the 4-8-4 hence the name Northern Type - some other railroads used different names - the New York Central Niagaras in the south Dixies or Presidents (RF&P)

An NP passenger train backs into the station

NP GN CB&Q and some other passenger trains had to use the wye to turn around so they would be facing East to leave the Depot for Minneapolis or Chicago

A Northern Pacific local pulls out with a 4-6-0 10-wheeler type steam loco

At this time there were nearly a hundred passenger trains each day going through the St Paul Union Depot
The switch tenders can be seen running around the plant - almost all of the turnouts were manually operated

A C&NW passenger train departs as another train arrives

A Burlington Zephyr streamlined passenger train arrives and departs a bit later

A C&NW passenger train heads east from St Paul

Milwaukee Road steam engines are shown in an engine terminal
