‘Constable's Great Landscapes: The Six-Foot Paintings’, an exhibition at The Huntington Art Museum in San Marino CA. Hockney is on the subject of finish: what it means to artists, what it means to the public, then and now. In the 19th century high finish was expected, otherwise a picture would be seen to be unfinished. We now take the opposite point of view. Hockney believes Constable had a more modern outlook.

Certainly over that last year David had adopted or co-opted Constable, investing in him many of the same interests and inspirations, like Rembrandt and the Chinese, that were animating his own landscape mission. He even copied the same dark rich red background of the exhibition space for the walls of his LA studio, for his LA gallery show and for the ‘A Bigger Picture’ exhibition of his Yorkshire landscapes at The Royal Academy in 2012.

Filmed over three years with unprecedented access, A Bigger Picture captures Britain’s most beloved painter at work. David Hockney’s return from California to paint the East Yorkshire landscape of his childhood – outside, in all weathers, through the seasons – culminates in the largest picture ever made outdoors. It’s an inspiring story of a painter in creative dialogue with nature and photography, and a revealing portrait of Britain’s most popular and celebrated artist.
