One of the main promises of capitalism is that it provides equal opportunities for everyone to be successful if one works hard enough. Yet, one of the main criticisms of capitalism is how the system widens the gap between the rich and the poor. Addressing this contradiction, Vivi Alatas shares lessons learned from researching poverty. She believes that while individuals determine their own destiny, the government needs to provide support to ensure equal starting points for everyone. In this talk, Vivi explores the key behaviors and policies necessary for someone to climb the socioeconomic ladder out of poverty. As former lead economist for the World Bank's Poverty program in Indonesia, Vivi Alatas head a proficient team focused on evidence-based analysis and policy reports concerning poverty reduction. With a background in Mathematics from the University of Indonesia and a PhD in Economics from Princeton University, she focuses her academic prowess for poverty research. Vivi and her team have crafted influential reports that addresses the rising divide, the poor and vulnerable household in Indonesia. These reports serve as vital references for government, civil society, the private sector, and development agencies where she emphasizes the collective responsibility of all sectors in the ongoing battle against poverty. Vivi's talk was recorded at Keong Emas Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, East Jakarta for TEDxJakarta—a 100% volunteer driven movement commited to ideas worth spreading, visit us at www.TEDxJakarta.org. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
