DBS is a surgical procedure to ease motor symptoms in patients diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The procedure involves placing thin electrodes on one or both sides of the brain in the part that controls movement. Once the electrons are in place, they are connected to a battery-operated device that supplies regular electrical pulses, called the Neurostimulator, which is surgically placed just beneath the collarbones. The entire procedure takes about 4-6 hours to complete, although you may need to stay under the observation of the medical staff overnight. Prior to the procedure, you will need to undergo routine body scans and blood tests, while 2 weeks after the procedure, your doctor will switch on the implanted pulse generator through a handheld device. This will allow the electrical pulses to be adjusted until symptoms improve.
