The Western Balkan route, often referred to only as the Balkan Route, has historically been a significant pathway for migration into Europe. It witnessed a surge in migration following the increased flow of migrants through the Eastern Mediterranean route.

After the European Union experienced a record number of arrivals in 2015, the number of irregular migrants using this route steadily declined for several years. However, since 2019, there has been a resurgence in its popularity.

According to the European border agency Frontex, in the year 2022, there were 145,600 reported instances of irregular border crossings along the Western Balkans route, marking a 136% increase compared to the previous year (2021). This figure represents the highest number of crossings reported on this route since 2015 and accounted for approximately half of all irregular entries reported in 2022.
