If you’re a drummer, and you tell me that no one has ever told you to quiet down…You’re either insane…or lying. I’ll be honest with you guys and tell you that I’ve been told this plenty of times - especially when I was first getting started playing drums in public in high school. Since then I’ve played in a lot of different rooms, large and small, and I’ve learned a few things. If you’re just getting out there playing with other musicians, please stay tuned because this is important info. If you’re an experienced player, hopefully I’ll confirm some things that you already know. Either way, today I’d like to present some points you may not have actually considered when someone told you that you’re playing too loud. I really hope that today’s video provides you with some food for thought when playing in small rooms. Make it a goal to achieve the best possible sound and feel in THAT circumstance, rather than having a default volume level that you always go to. Remember that the gig isn’t all about you being heard, and you may even need to disappear into the music depending on the song. But that’s a topic for another video! Keep those drums loud and those cymbals quiet, and you’ll be good to go.
