After the Jews were granted the freedom to return to their ancestral home of Israel from their exile to and captivity in Babylon then by the Medo-Persians, a large body of canonical literature was produced in various genres including poetry (the Psalms), history (Esther, Nehemiah, Ezra), and prophecy (Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi). Each of these works lays the foundation for the anticipation of the coming Messiah and the establishment of the New Covenant with Yahweh and the redeemed.
