Ram Tanu Pandey (popularly known as Tansen) received his training in music from Swami Haridas. Following this, he started singing at the Gwalior palace where Sheikh Mohammed Ghouse became his spiritual guide. It was during his stay at Gwalior that Ram Tanu got married and also got the name of 'Tansen' from Baiju Bawra. Thereafter, Tansen went to the palace of Ramchandra Baghel, the king of Rewa. Following which, he was called by King Akbar to sing in his court. Awed by Tansen's singing, King Akbar asked if Tansen knew of anyone who sang even better than him. Tansen humbly mentioned the name of his teacher - Swami Haridas. So keen was King Akbar to listen to Swami Haridas that he went incognito with Tansen to Vrindavan. Listening to Swami Haridas’ singing King Akbar was overwhelmed. King Akbar asked Tansen the 'secret' behind Swami Haridas' sublime singing.
