This video looks at using the Wista Automatic Aperture Opening system with a Nikkor W 135mm f5.6 lens mounted in a Copal for-WISTA NO.0 shutter on a large format. 4x5 Wista 45D metal field camera.

Many Wista 45 metal field cameras (and some 4x5 backs for Rittreck View 5x7 cameras) have a threaded socket on the ground glass frame. This is for Wista's Automatic Aperture Opening (AAO) system which works with lenses mounted in Copal for-WISTA NO.0 and NO.1 shutters and a special double-ended cable to automatically close the shutter and stop down the aperture when a holder is inserted in the back. (Sinar made a similar system for their large format monorail cameras.)

The Copal for-WISTA shutters are self-cocking, a single lever winds the shutter mechanism then releases it in one movement. They are sometimes referred to as "press" shutters because they were popular on press cameras like the Speed Graphic. The fastest speeds on self-cocking shutters are limited to 1/125 second compared to 1/500 for Copal 0 and 1/400 for Copal 1 shutters.

Note that the Rittreck company (also known as Musashino Kōki K.K.) had a colourful financial history, eventually entering bankruptcy around 1972 and renaming itself K.K. Wista after the new 4x5 technical camera it was releasing that year. For several years the Rittreck View 5x7 and the Wista 45N and 45D cameras appeared in the same catalogues, and 4x5 backs for the Rittreck made during that period share many parts used in the Wista.
