Starting the battle on the open fields of Smohain right of the garrison, the guard positioned themselves stretching from the right border to the road parallel. Early on the Gendarmes d'Élite on the left flank captured the King's Colours of the 1. KGL and the battle line pushed the coalition back to midfield. After several one to one engagements yielded flags, recognizing the disposition, the 1. KGL returned to battle on the right flank to fight Marins de la Garde. The Marines, outnumbered 5 men, were forced to retreat along the right hand side of the map, luring the enemy company into an encirclement by the Voltigeurs of the Young Guard. After an attempted breakout with all flags in jeopardy, the KGL lost 3 of 4 company flags. The battle returned to an even match come the final 10 minutes, but the advantage secured was enormous. The Corps of Chasseurs of the Imperial Guard won a decisive victory over the greatest fighting force in the time zone, winning the title.
