This was a bad LCD module No LCD modules were harmed.... much :)
It's not a matter of whether or not it can be done but how hard as this is the difference between a negative and positive LCD display. Apparently it's not too bad getting the polariser off.
The trick now is getting it re-assembled again. As it's a bad module I expect the same issues with it that it had before.
