Kerfed MDF Slot Port Subwoofer Box - Paint and Carpet Combo

Bend and curve a fresh 3/4" MDF sheet and turn it into a beautiful L-port for vented car subwoofer box of a small but powerful 8 inch subwoofer.

This small but beefy subwoofer has a very nice Kevlar cone and weighs about 7 kilos, very heavy for a small eight inches subwoofer. And is pre-wired with 10 gauge cables in each voice coils.

Ok, let's start the project by shopping a fresh sheet of 18mm MDF (medium density fiberboard) at a local home depot. Calculated and designed the box dimensions against the woofer's parameters using Bass Box 6 Pro, updated to the latest version. I've calculated to have a target box resonance of 47Hz just to give justice of the woofer's Fs which is about 54Hz. At 01:00 mark, cut 12 kerfs with 10mm gap distance in between them. Then wet before bending to prevent the board from cracking. We will use the old wood glue in strengthening the kerfs together and apply generous amount of No nail all purpose adhesive to further strengthen the kerfs. Once dried, cut 45 degree angle on every edge of the port to promote smooth air movement within the sound box.

Glue and nail all panels together and let dry. Use the table saw in cutting a little notch on the front baffle sides. This notch will be the place to tuck in the carpet seam for a more seamless look.

Paint and cover the rest of the box a charcoal black carpet. Use 4mm T-nuts and Carbon steel Allen head bolts in securing the woofer.

Once finished, test and measure the subwoofer system using Dayton Audio DATS v3 to verify final system impedance, which is about 41Hz. Not bad for a fresh, out-of-the box brand new 8 inches woofer!
