Carrying out a Coolant change on your vehicle is a simple DIY job that requires some basic tools. It is very important that you only work on the cooling system when the vehicle is cold. The reason being is that when the vehicle heats up to operating temperature, the cooling system builds up a lot of pressure. This pressure can be released from the cooling system when we remove the radiator cap. To carry out the coolant change you will also require some basic tools, check out the list above for all of this bits and pieces you will require.

Here is a basic run down of all the steps necessary to carry out a coolant change on your vehicle -
1. Ensure vehicle is cold and has not been started
2. Remove the radiator cap and set aside
3. Remove any under trays or bash plates under the bottom of the radiator
4. Place your drain tray under the radiator and remove the radiator drain bung
5. Catch and measure all coolant remove from the vehicle
6. Suck out remining coolant from overflow bottle or remove bottle and empty
7. Measure coolant and ensure all of the coolant has been removed from the system
8. Refit coolant overflow bottle to the vehicle
9. Mix up concentrated coolant with demineralized water (or use premix coolant)
10. Pour coolant into radiator with funnel and fill until no air bubbles come out
11. Run engine with heater on full and with a/c off
12. Top up radiator until no more bubbles come out and the radiator is full
13. Fit Radiator cap
14. Rev Vehicle up to 2000rpm and allow it to reach operating temp
15. Recheck cooling system and ensure there are no leaks
16. Refit under trays and clean down the engine bay.
17. Road test vehicle for at least 30 minutes.
18. Allow vehicle to cool down completely (at least 4 hours)
19. Recheck cooling system for leaks
20. Top up radiator one last time and recheck overflow bottle level
21. ALL DONE :) YAY!

Changing the coolant on your vehicle is an easy job that can be carried out at home with some basic tools. Allow yourself a full day to change the coolant with breaks in between for allowing the vehicle to cool down. I prefer to use coolant concentrate as I find that it usually lasts a little longer. The Penrite green coolant concentrate can last up to 8 years and 500,000km. It is recommended to mix the Penrite green coolant concentrate at a 50:50 ration with demineralized water. This can be purchased online or from any good auto store.

Isuzu recommends that the factory filled coolant is changed at 75,000km or at the 60 month service. Once replaced with long life green coolant it must then be checked every service to ensure that the concentration is correct. This can be carried out with coolant test strips which I have linked above for you. Thanks for watching the coolant change on my Isuzu Mu-x.
