He was born in Zimbabwe in 1961; attended primary school in Zambia, high school in Scotland and studied at the University of Wales. He quit his job from Zimbabwe's State controlled telephone monopoly and set up his own business with an equivalent of US$75. He became the youngest ever recipient of the Zimbabwe Businessman of the year award in 1990. He listed Econet Wireless Zimbabwe in 1998; which is now the second largest company by market cap on the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange.
