Hello everyone, this time we are going to see the rescue of a Trichocentrum orchid also known in some places as Donkey's Ear Orchid, due to the similarity of the leaves of the plant with the animal's ears.
The tree where these plants lived was uprooted one night by a strong storm, so I got a call from a security friend from the nearby building who knows about my passion for orchids and he told me that there were some plants that seemed to be orchids on a tree that had fallen.
The Trichocentrum are a species of epiphytic orchids that live mainly clinging to the trunks of trees, plants very resistant to different altitudes, plants being found at sea level and some at more than 1300 meters high.
It is 100% epiphytic, it has small rhizomes with thick roots and pseudobulbs so small that it seems that it is only a leaf, but there they are, although not very visible. For each pseudobulb there is only one fairly rigid leaf that can measure about 50 cm long by 14 cm wide. The leaves closely resemble a donkey's ears and hence its popular name.
The floral stem is axillary, comes out from the side of the leaves and can be up to a meter and a half long and can hold up to more than 40 flowers. If they have it at home, it is good to put a tutor to prevent the wand from breaking.
I have seen these orchids grown in baskets with good drainage and with a substrate of pine and charcoal and also anchored in logs as I am doing with this little one, the largest was sent to another place with more space.
If there is an orchid that evolved to survive, it is the Trichocentrum, since it is an extremely resistant plant when it grows in tropical climates and there have been cases of orchids with burnt leaves that have come to flower without problems.
The ideal temperature is between 20-28 degrees Celsius, developing better in semi-shade receiving filtered light from trees or protective mesh, its leaves easily succumb to direct sunlight.
He likes humidity and it should be relative higher than 70%, it is good to water in the morning to increase said humidity.
It can be watered 3-4 times a week, avoiding substrate puddles that can favor the appearance of fungi that prevent the appearance of flowering. They can be fixed on trees and the pots should be at least six feet high so their blooms don't touch the ground, but like I said, the wand can be tied to prevent it from arching too much.
I have fixed this little girl to a coffee tree trunk, with a little moss to give it moisture and a little coconut fiber so that the moss does not fall off. You can give a regular fertilizer every 15 days also with half the recommended dose.
