Strings and Beyond here talking about long scale and short scale bass guitar strings.

The long and short of it is short scale basses are generally defined as having scale lengths between 30″ and 32″. Long scale basses conventionally have a 34″ string length or longer.

The most important thing you need to determine is the scale of your instrument, then find strings according to the scale length you need. Start by measuring the distance between the bridge and the nut. That is your effective scale length.

Short scale bass strings are for smaller bass guitars with a shorter distance between the bridge and the nut. These strings carry less tension and are great for younger players or those looking for closer spacing between frets. Short scale strings are often fatter (heavier gauge) and produce wide and smooth low notes.

Long scale strings are the industry standard. Essentially, the lower the note you want to produce, the longer the string needs to be to maximize the fundamental tone. The industry standard for five-string basses has gradually shifted from 34 to a 35” scale. That extra inch adds just enough tension to give the low B string better tone, feel, and articulation.
