King's Seat | Pictish Hillfort Tour | Scottish History

Описание к видео King's Seat | Pictish Hillfort Tour | Scottish History

King's Seat is a Pictish hillfort next to the village of Dunkeld, the name of which comes from Dùn Chailleann, 'Fort of the Caledonians'. Dunkeld is said to have been founded by Caustantín, King of the Picts, from about 789 until 820. The name probably originally referred to the hillfort itself. It was located on an important choke point between the Highlands and the Lowlands, overseeing an important ancient road. Nowadays it is hard to spot because a forest is growing on it and until recently it was impossible to go up to the top since it was overgrown with rhododendron. Believe me - we tried. Luckily, a few years ago it was decided to excavate the hillfort and they removed the rhododendron. The finds are yet to be presented in a museum, but we were able to get a sneak peak during a Pictish-themed event. Those finds included several moulds for pouring metal, including one for a small hand-held mirror, as well as, glass beads, game pieces and spear heads. Since we were in the area, we decided to do small hillfort tour. There is a big hill next to King's Seat known as 'Craig-a-Barns', which has a viewpoint (locally known as Polney Craig) from which you can see the hillfort, so we went up there as well. A few years ago, during the Winter time when foliage doesn't obscure the view, we discovered a small cave at the foot of Craig-a-Barns. We went up to the cave once more to film it so I could share this with you, because, frankly, it is a cool cave. ☟☟☟
