In the early19th century there was need to transport goods inland to prevent imported and exported goods being pinched by the French in the channel during the Napoleonic Wars. Canal Mania was at it height and a route from London to Portsmouth was dug. Chichester saw the importance of being attached to that navigation and the ship canal was tacked on to the waterway. Martin Snow and I go to investigate.
