Woodturning a Monkey Puzzle bowl. Monkey puzzle is unusual as the branches grow in annular rings around truck of then tree unlike the norm which is at random intervals along the trunk.

A very close relative of the US Norfolk Pine, the Monkey Puzzle tree is an ancient pine dating back to prehistoric times.

Monkey Puzzle/Norfolk Pine is very soft and only attractive to turners because of the branch arrangement and sometimes some spalting. Spalted Monkey Puzzle/Norfolk pine is often blue-green and grey in colour.

William Hunt's Default Woodturning Finish

1. Abrasive to 240 gr
2. Remove dust with airline then
3. Methylated spirits/denatured alcohol.
4. Apply a coat of cellulose sanding sealer diluted with 50% thinners.
5. After its dry, dennib using 0000 grade wire wool or fines abrasive pad much as 3M.
6. Remove dust using airline and apply a coat if undiluted sanding sealer.
7. Yorkshire Grit
8. Yorkshire Grit Microfine
9. Hampshire Sheen High Gloss
10. Hampshire Sheen Microcrystalline Wax
