Join me today with my first watercolour demo for 2023, an experimental approach to painting an impressionist line and wash sketch using PENCIL for the sketchy linework, a soft wash with a limited palette of 3 colours and SALT to create these amazing effects of blossoms, dappled sunlight, leaves and foliage. These spontaneous, sketch-style paintings can work out well, the trick is to try the method a few times, and try to see any happy accidents or opportunities as you paint and exploit those opportunities to turn the flow of paint and water into something loose and lovely! The more you practice, the easier this becomes, remember to go with the flow rather than trying too hard to tame watercolour.

I'm using Millford 100% cotton cold pressed 140lb/300g weight paper, 11" x 15"/28cms x 38cms, but use any type paper you have, my paper is taped to my board with ordinary decorators masking tape and is at an angle of about 45 degrees so gravity will help me paint. I sketch it out first then complete the linework at the end with an ordinary carpenters pencil, I use a limited palette of just 3 colours ultramarine blue, lemon yellow and burnt sienna and ordinary fine table salt for the effects. I use various brushes as demonstrated in the video to f but use whichever colours you feel like playing and experimenting with, and whichever similar brushes you have.
