Quadriceps, often referred to as "quads," are a group of four muscles located at the front of the thigh. They are collectively responsible for extending the knee joint and flexing the hip joint. The four muscles that make up the quadriceps are:

Rectus femoris: This muscle is the only quadriceps muscle that crosses both the hip and knee joints, making it responsible for both hip flexion and knee extension.

Vastus lateralis: This muscle is located on the outer side of the thigh and is the largest of the quadriceps muscles. It is responsible for knee extension.

Vastus medialis: This muscle is located on the inner side of the thigh, just above the knee. It helps stabilize the patella (kneecap) and assists in knee extension.

Vastus intermedius: This muscle lies underneath the rectus femoris and is responsible for knee extension.

The quadriceps are crucial for activities that involve lower body movements such as walking, running, jumping, and squatting. They are also important for maintaining balance and stability in the lower body. Proper strength and flexibility of the quadriceps are essential for overall lower body function and performance in various sports and physical activities.
