Kim Jong Un prefers to travel by train for several reasons that are mostly about security, tradition, and comfort.

First, security is the main factor. His armored train is heavily fortified, with bulletproof carriages, reinforced floors, and even modern communication systems. Air travel can be riskier for him due to possible attacks, mechanical failures, or international airspace restrictions. The train allows his security team to control the entire environment and avoid many unknowns.

Second, there is a strong tradition behind it. Both his father, Kim Jong Il, and grandfather, Kim Il Sung, also used the train for foreign trips. Kim Jong Il was even known to dislike flying and relied almost entirely on his train for state visits. By continuing this tradition, Kim Jong Un projects continuity and loyalty to his family’s legacy.

Finally, the train is also a matter of comfort and prestige. It is reported to be luxuriously equipped, with conference rooms, sleeping quarters, fine dining, and advanced communications so he can govern while traveling. It’s essentially a moving command center, giving him control and convenience during long journeys.
