Watching Planes Clash Above During Battle Of Britain | WW2: I Was There

Описание к видео Watching Planes Clash Above During Battle Of Britain | WW2: I Was There

When war broke out it was just coming up to George’s 17th birthday. He was living in Whitstable on the South Kent coast when the call came for all those who were ineligible for front line military service to join the Local Defence Volunteers (LDV). George duly signed up. One of his jobs was the nightly guard of what were perceived targets on the south coast, such as gas works and telecommunication sites. They would especially be on the look-out for German paratroopers and spies. From his home on the south coast George watched the dog fights above his head during the Battle of Britain, and the bombers heading to London during The Blitz. It was watching these events that inspired him to join the RAF when he came of age.
