Everything you need to know about the Beatles' "For No One." |

Written in March 1966 on holiday with Jane Asher in Switzerland, "For No One" is a curiously serene account of the end of an affair, as matter-of-fact in its recognition of deceased love as "Eleanor Rigby" in its tale of lonely death. The song's original title was "Why Did It Die?" The only emotion shown in this elegant waltz comes in a puzzled reckoning: 'a love that should have lasted years'. Neither partner on Paul's cool scenario commands much sympathy, his detachment precluding the compassion of "Eleanor Rigby."

One may speculate that Paul's relationship with Dot Rhone was the inspiration for "For No One," but later insights appear to point in another direction. His book "Many Years From Now" has him relating: 🗣️ "I suspect it was about another argument. I don’t have easy relationships with women, I never have. I talk too much truth. It's a song about rejection. The breakup, or marking the end of a relationship that didn't work, has always been quite a rich area to explore in a song. Jane Asher and I were together for around five years, so at the back of my mind I expected to marry her, but as the time got closer, I think I also realized it wasn't right."
