Key Ideas and Details | Literacy Strategies for Students with Significant Cognitive Disabilities

In this self-contained high school classroom, the teacher supports the recall of key ideas and details of a text by asking students specific questions about what they had read. Students then respond with various modes of communication, including conventional gestures, spoken words, symbols, and individual communication systems. The video demonstrates effective strategies for engaging students with disabilities in literacy instruction.

This collection was developed through a collaborative partnership with the Iowa Department of Education; the University of Northern Iowa; The Center for Literacy Disabilities Studies, UNC Chapel Hill; and general and special education teachers across Iowa The purpose of the collection is to support educators and families in understanding how all students can learn and make progress in Iowa’s English Language Arts Academic Standards.
