Shabana Azmi was born in 1950 to poet Kaifi Azmi and actress Shaukat Azmi. She grew up in a small home where many families lived together, and her world was filled with poetry and theatre. From a young age, she knew she wanted to act. After studying at FTII Pune, she got her first film Ankur in 1974, which won her a National Award.

But her journey wasn’t easy. In commercial films she often felt uncomfortable, and once she was even insulted on set so badly that she walked away crying. In her personal life too, she faced the pain of not having children, and supported her husband Javed Akhtar through his fight with alcoholism. She also cared for her father after he was left paralyzed.

Still, she never gave up. She chose strong roles that showed real women’s struggles, like in the movie Arth. She became not just an actress but also a social worker, always speaking for women’s rights and justice.

Today, after acting in more than 160 films, winning 5 National Awards and the Padma Bhushan, Shabana Azmi is loved as one of the greatest icons of Indian cinema.
