From singing on trains to becoming one of Bollywood’s most loved stars – Ayushmann Khurrana’s journey is nothing less than a film itself.
Born in Chandigarh, Ayushmann was a middle-class boy with big dreams. His father, a strict astrologer, believed in discipline to the point of harsh punishments. Ayushmann has openly shared how he was beaten with belts and chappals, even in his twenties, for small mistakes. That childhood shaped his resilience.
As a college student, Ayushmann and his friends travelled on the Pashchim Express, singing songs in train coaches. The few rupees they collected helped them fund their trips – a small but significant step in learning how to perform for strangers.
At just 22, Ayushmann became a radio jockey in Delhi, bagging a breakfast show slot usually reserved for veterans. Soon after, MTV spotted him and he joined Roadies 2. Winning the show gave him not just fame but also the confidence that he could dream bigger.
But success didn’t come easy. When he once called Karan Johar’s office for an audition, he was bluntly told – “We don’t audition newcomers.” Rejected without a chance. Still, he didn’t give up.
In 2012, Ayushmann got his big break with Vicky Donor. Playing a sperm donor was a huge risk for a debut, but the film became a blockbuster. His first film gave him a National Film Award for Best Debut.
Since then, Ayushmann has built a unique identity in Bollywood – choosing films that mix entertainment with social issues. From Dum Laga Ke Haisha to Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, Badhaai Ho, Article 15, Dream Girl and Bala – his films have started conversations on love, body image, caste, age, and taboos.
Even today, Ayushmann pushes boundaries, while dealing with personal struggles like vertigo, which he manages with meditation and strength.
