If you had not heard, October is not just about Halloween anymore, it is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. What does this song have to do with breast cancer you might ask? Chrissy Amphlett of the Divinlys passed away “after a protracted battle” with the disease in 2013. And while I consider all breasts to be beautiful, Miss Amphlett was particularly blessed in that region of her anatomy. My younger sister, Kelly, is a breast cancer survivor who is closing in on the coveted 5 year mark. And my wife’s best friend, Denise, is doing well in her first year post treatment. Breast cancer is no longer a death sentence and early detection is key to a good prognosis. As with many cancer treatments, the cure is almost as bad as the disease itself, often leaving the survivor with lifelong side effects, but that’s why they are called “survivors” as they often bear scars both visible and invisible. My positive thoughts go out to anybody whose life has been touched by breast cancer.

The song is “I Touch Myself” by The Divinlys from the band’s fourth, self-titled album.

Anyway, it’s a simple and effective bass line that I’ve always liked quite a bit. When I was learning it I was surprised at just how laid back and behind the beat the bass was. I tried to lay back as far as I could but I can only lay back so far. I was also surprised to learn that it was Randy Jackson who played the bass on the recording. Probably now most notable for his role on American Idol, some people may not know that he’s actually a monster bass player. Monster I say.

And yeah, I know I’m a little flat. The song is a hair sharp and I forgot to tweak my tuning.
