Noun + として
as a…; being in the role of…; in the capacity of

Noun that it modifies represents a role, capacity, or function in which someone or something in the sentence serves. として is equivalent to “as” in English or “ being in the role of…” or “in the capacity of”, depending on the context.


〜という立場で / 〜という資格で/〜という名目で
From the standpoint of / with the qualification of / under the name of


「Noun + として」VS「Noun +にとって」
～にとって means “from the standpoint of”. It is used to state from whose perspective the evaluation is made. It is often used for a person, organization or group. Adjective sentences follow in most cases.


○アランさんは英語は簡単だというが、私にとって難しい。
×アランさんは英語は簡単だというが、私として難しい。
Alan says English is easy, but it's difficult for me.


○四川料理は日本人にとって辛すぎる。
×四川料理は日本人にとって辛すぎる。
Sichuan food is too spicy for Japanese people.

2.Noun + としてis used to describe the use of a thing. It is also often used when a thing is used for purposes other than its original purpose.

ビデオを返し忘れたせいで、延滞料金として1000円払わせられた。
Because I forgot to return the video, I was forced to pay 1000 yen as a late fee.


この体育館は地震が起きた時、近所の住人向けの避難場所として使われます。
This gymnasium will be used as an evacuation site for residents in the neighborhood in the event of an earthquake.
3. Noun + としてis used to indicate the content of a general evaluation, such as "known as" or "famous as".

東京バナナは東京のお土産として有名なくせに、海外でも買えます。
