We held a pivotal one-day conference celebrating five years of ground-breaking research and policy work by the Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy (MCTD). As we stand at a critical juncture for both technology and democratic governance, this gathering examined the urgent challenges and choices facing the UK in an AI-powered world.

The final panel of the day brought together experts who are thinking through tech harms and solutions. There is still much work to do around online safety and harms, and emerging AI technologies threaten to worsen harms in the short term. The panelists spoke about the social and legal solutions they are bringing forward to protect people from online harms, the inner workings of the ad tech ecosystem, and the importance of a rights-based approach to AI.
