Steps to Take Before Getting In the Saddle | Desensitizing Is A Waste of Time

There is a lot you want to see before you try and get in the saddle. If you can’t command and communicate on the ground, you’ll never be able to communicate from the saddle. You cannot just get on your mule and expect everything to go smoothly without basic ground foundation training.

The mule must respond properly to the rope halter before you can get in the saddle. You want to see how he responds to the communication. Is he listening to the slightest amount of pressure? Will he go to the left when the rope halter puts pressure on the right of the nose? Will he go to the right with just a little bit of pressure on the left of the nose?

The mule needs to be light and needs to respond to your movement. You cannot desensitize. Do you have a mountain lion to desensitize with? Do you have a bear? Do you own a semi truck and can practice driving back and forth? Desensitizing is a waste of time — halter training is the solution.
