How to calculate calories required for weight loss using a detailed DEXA body composition scan at Bodyscan (UK)?

In this video, I’m going to show you why a DEXA scan is the best method for working out how many calories you need in order to lose fat, gain muscle or both.

At the end of the day, whatever anyone tells you, your body mass and therefore your weight on the scale is fundamentally driven by the number of calories you eat.

For your weight to stay the same, energy in must equal energy out. If you eat and drink the same number of calories you expend, your weight will stay the same.

That number of calories, when calories in equals calories out, is known as your ‘maintenance calories, and when you reach that state of equilibrium you are said to be ‘eating at maintenance’. This number is highly important to calculate calories required for the body.

Now, the fundamental principle of fat loss is that you have to be in a calorie deficit or eat below maintenance. That is how to calculate calories required for weight loss.

To spell it out, the number of calories you consume through food and drink must be less than the number of calories you expend by being alive – and that is the number of calories your body needs to maintain your bodily functions and keep it ticking over, plus the calories you burn through exercise and physical movement.

If you want to build muscle, to optimize muscle growth you should eat slightly above maintenance. That is, be in a small calorie surplus, accompanied by an effective resistance training program to stimulate muscle growth.

Finally, if you want to build muscle and lose fat at the same time (something called body recomposition), you will obviously still need a very effective training program to gain lean mass, but you’ll need to be in a small calorie deficit in order to lose fat.

You can see, then, that to be successful, it’s important to be very confident when you start that you are actually in a calorie deficit or a calorie surplus and how big that calorie imbalance is. If your fat-busting deficit is too big, you’ll lose a lot of muscle. If your muscle-building surplus is too big you’ll quickly get fat.

The key to knowing how many calories you need to eat is to know your Resting Metabolic Rate or RMR. Knowing your RMR is very important to calculate the number of calories you need per day. Watch the video to know more.
