Fighting Osmosis In Fibreglass Boats

Описание к видео Fighting Osmosis In Fibreglass Boats

During our boat restoration we found a moderate amount of osmosis in the hull - largely due to water gathering inside the cabin below the sole. In this video, we step through what we did to deal with this all too common problem.

LET US BE CLEAR : Our osmosis problem is very specific - it's much more on the inside of the hull than the outside, since water was pooling below the sole. If you have osmosis on your boat, or even suspect you have, GET A SURVEY DONE. Unless you have gills, your hull is the difference between life and death. Don't mess about with it unless you're absolutely 100% sure you're doing the right thing. This is just what we did on OUR boat in OUR situation.

Osmosis can occur where there are gaps or voids in the fibreglass "lay-up", or between fibreglass and gelcoat, where water is drawn into the voids and forms an acid which weakens the strength and quality of the laminate. Fixing it is vital to the safety of any boat.

If your boat has a serious osmosis problem, or you don't feel comfortable doing this kind of work yourself, we would always advise you to seek advice from a professional!
