Jean Joseph Marie Amiot (1718 - 1793), was a Jesuit missionary who lived in Beijing for over forty years. He was a major scholar and the translator of European languages for the Qianlong Emperor. He wrote widely on Chinese music and made extensive transcriptions of Chinese melodies. He also wrote about performing French music (including Les Sauvages, performed here) to Chinese audiences in the Imperial Palace. This is a re-imagination of one of his concerts.
