The song mixed catchy melodies with an absurdly comical narrative and it's upbeat tempo and irreverent lyrics about accidentally running over a neighbor's dog with a Model T Ford struck a chord with listeners, offering a moment of levity during a dark time.

However, wartime censorship was particularly strict, and authorities were concerned that the song's frivolous nature might undermine the seriousness of the war effort. As a result, "I Ran the Dog Over" faced heavy censorship, with several lines altered or removed entirely. Each time the song was re-released with new, often equally humorous, covers to keep it fresh and in line with the censors' demands. This led to multiple versions of the vinyl, each with a unique cover and slightly different lyrics.

The most famous and rarest edition is the rumored Frank Sinatra cover. Legend has it that Sinatra recorded a cover of "I Ran the Dog Over" as a tongue-in-cheek joke during a recording session.
