Civilisations that live along the world's great rivers — the Nile, the Amazon, the Mississippi, the Thames — have many colourful and noisy traditions. I walk down from Folly Bridge to Donnington Bridge, watching one of the noisiest, the end of Oxford University's bumping races for the Summer Eights. An "eight" is the type of boat used, so-called because it holds nine people.
