Hey all! I hope you’re having a great summer. It has been hot here in Missouri- yesterday we had a record heat index of 122…so I’ve not been spending a lot of time here in the garage.
I’ve been busy- a few weeks ago I had a blast at the railroad prototype modelers meet outside Saint Louis…it was awesome getting to see a lot of you guys there at the show…and a big shout out to our friends at the Missouri pacific historical society who had these cool shirts made for the event.

Today we are taking a look at some massive flat cars that are big on details—- we’re talking about the new heavy-duty flat cars from class one model works.

First up, I want to give a great big thank you to our viewer and friend Jason Rash who sent me this awesome car for the layout! We sure appreciate you!

It has been a few months since we have done one of these run-and-review episodes and I thought it was time to take a look at some cool stuff coming out.

A few months back, Class One Model Works announced new models representing General Steel Castings Corporation's heavy-duty depressed center flatcar and they’ve finally hit the rails. These 58.5-foot-long cars carried heavy oversized loads- hence the three-axle trucks. Another recognizable feature was the lowered decks so the taller freight could clear lower overhead clearances that might pose a problem- like tunnels or bridges.

You could find these mixed with other cars on freight trains….or depending on the delivery- special runs all by themselves.

Class One is offering these in several popular road names…of course, the Missouri Kansas Texas version is the one we’re looking at.

Right out of the box, I can tell this car is superb and highly detailed. As you might expect with a bigger car, it has some weight to it- coming in at about 3 ounces but the NMRA standard 4 ounces for this car would be reached once you put a load on.

The Missouri Kansas Texas had one of these cars on the roster- 14001…and this model represents that sole unit. The data on the car is correct- showing a build date of July 1972…and assembled at Katy’s Denison Texas shops.

A common type of load for this car would have been large industrial equipment and electrical transformers. The three axles trucks were for the extra load weight.

This car would have been right at home on the Sedalia and Saint Louis Subdivisions. That’s because in the timeframe I’m modeling, the Katy served the Calloway nuclear power plant near the town of Portland, and the Kansas City Power & Light plant near Montrose.

There was also the Missouri Public Service power plant at Sedalia which I model, but it was long dormant by the timeframe of the layout. To top it off, at North Jefferson, the railroad served the Westinghouse plant which shipped outbound loads of electrical equipment and transformers- but I can’t find any details about the size of those loads.

Taking a quick overview of the car…the details are very fine…this thing is chock full of separately applied details- grab irons and end stirrups, uncoupling levers, brake rigging, and air hoses, nice handbrakes…they are on the fragile side…it all looks amazing but you’ll want to handle it with care.

One of my favorite features is the see-through grate decking on the car- you can see right down to the wheels and track.

The car reporting marks and data are accurate- very nice and crisp…this guy’s aging eyes could see the clean lettering with no issues. There are even reporting marks on the trucks—-that is attention to detail!

You can tell Class One Model Works did a lot of research and put a lot of hard work into these cars to get them right. It’s certainly something unique for my freight car roster…and I’m excited to put it to work here on my Sedalia subdivision layout. We’ll see you again soon here on the main track!
