Jets coach and former 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh was fired by the New York Jets this morning in a surprising move made by owner Woody Johnson.

Saleh reported to the Jets facility to begin preparations for week 6 after a loss to the Vikings in London on Sunday morning and was informed that he was out.

This does have Aaron Rodgers written all over it. Him and Saleh never seemed to be on great terms. Saleh is a defensive coach, Rodgers a unique personality. His buddy Nathaniel Hackett is the OC. Per reports, Saleh was thinking about firing him, instead it’s Saleh who gets canned.

Woody Johnson: This is one of the most talented teams we’ve had, felt it was necessary to make a move.

Obviously since Saleh is gone, he immediately gets tied to the Niners
The 49ers defense in 2023 and in 2024 has taken a big step back from when Saleh and DeMeco Ryans coordinated the defense
Nick Sorensen is a rookie DC who’s struggled to start the year, especially in a couple of key areas. Defense has been underwhelming in generating a pass rush, stopping the run, secondary breakdowns left and right, can’t get off the field on third downs
Saleh was a great defensive coordinator for the Niners, who used that gig as a launching pad to become a DC in this league from 2017-2020.

Under Saleh’s watch since 2021, the Jets defense was

1st in points per drive
1st in EPA per play
3rd in success rate

Despite playing the fourth-most snaps over that stretch. He delivered on that side of the ball, the Jets just never got QB right:
Zach Wilson: 33 games
Mike White: 7 games
Aaron Rodgers: 6 games
Joe Flacco: 5 games
Trevor Siemian: 3 games
Tim Boyle: 2 games
According to Mike Silver: Saleh plans to go on vacation and take time off with his family and doesn’t plan on coaching again this year. Then he’ll hit the market as a coaching free agent this upcoming offseason and he will be one of the top DC candidates on the market.

Would you bring in Robert Saleh as a DC next year? Y/N

Talanoa Hufanga has ligament damage in his wrist and will miss a month or so. San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan said, “A month. Probably longer. Could be. We haven’t decided whether to do it or not yet.”

The team is still debating whether to put Hufanga on the Injured Reserve. Shanahan said he’s been happy with rookie safety Malik Mustapha, specifically his communication.

Jake Moody & Charvarius Ward
“It’s a high ankle sprain, so I usually say about a month. Sometimes, they go quicker, and sometimes, they take longer. IR’s an option. Having Huf in that situation where we have to decide. Mooney could be a possible decision. We have a number of guys already on it, so we’re just trying to weigh all that stuff.”

Nick Bosa: Must win game
Fred Warner: If I have to get you up for this game, we have the wrong guys on the roster

49ers signed Matthew Wright
Wright is 40-of-47 in field goals and 35-of-37 in extra points during his career, 6/9 on 50+
NIners signed him last year going into week 1
